Equity markets continued to rally in March, although a rise in long-term interest rates during the month led to some volatility, especially for growth and technology companies. The S&P 500 gained 4.38 percent, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose by 6.78 percent. The Nasdaq Composite's heavy technology weighting dragged down its performance, resulting in a gain of only 0.48 percent during the month. Despite the volatility, both the Dow and the S&P 500 ended the month close to all-time highs, and the Nasdaq has since bounced back. Markets remain in rally mode, although the risks are still significant.

Equity markets rebounded in February despite some late-month volatility driven by a spike in U.S. interest rates. The S&P 500 gained 2.76 percent, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose by 3.43 percent. Riskier assets were hit hardest by the volatility at month-end, and the technology-weighted Nasdaq Composite gained 1.01 percent. Despite the overall positive results, the month-end volatility served as a reminder of the potential risks markets still face.

Markets continued to rally into the end of the year, with strong December results wrapping up a solid year for equities. The S&P 500 gained 3.17 percent during the month as the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 3.41 percent and the Nasdaq Composite rose by 5.71 percent. Despite the strong returns in December to cap off the year, markets still face very real risks.

Markets rebounded in November, as positive news on the vaccine caused markets to surge. The S&P 500 gained 10.95 percent during the month, while the Nasdaq Composite rose by 11.91 percent and the Dow Jones Industrial Average by 12.14 percent. These strong results helped break a streak of two consecutive months with declining equity markets, and all three indices set new all-time highs. Despite the strong returns in November, however, markets still face very real risks, as we discuss below.
