Rob Kane, CAIA, is a senior investment research analyst on the Investment Management and Research team at Commonwealth Financial Network®, member FINRA/SIPC, a Registered Investment Adviser–independent broker/dealer. With the firm since July 2013, he facilitates our due diligence and research activities on mutual funds, separate account managers, ETFs, and fixed income securities. He has a bachelor's degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and holds FINRA Series 7, 63, and 66 securities registrations and the CAIA designation. His background in investments includes investment analysis and portfolio management. Rob's analysis experience has led him to a niche focus in alternative investments.

Alternative Investments and the Well-Balanced Portfolio

Earlier this week, my colleague Rob Swanke wrote about the relevance of the 60/40 portfolio in light of the current market environment. He asked whether this investment model, which seeks to balance the growth potential of equities with the volatility mitigation potential of fixed income, should be abandoned. Spoiler alert! Rob suggests we need to look forward, not backward, when making portfolio decisions, even though market conditions have changed. While short-term adjustments may help boost performance, the 60/40 portfolio can still be an attractive choice for the moderately aggressive investor.
